Nearly identical to the newer 5MH, the 2018 Mercury 5 Hp 5MH Outboard Motor is the earlier model-year version of this short-shaft, carbureted, manual-start tiller outboard, with no internal battery of its own. Why the model year is the main difference Mercury carried this 5 horsepower single-cylinder design forward essentially unchanged: displacement still comes in at 7.5/123 by Mercury's cubic-inch-and-cc figure, bore and stroke still measure 2.32 by 1.77 inches, and the rev range still tops out at 5500 rpm, with 4500 rpm at the bottom, fed by a carburetor rather than EFI. Pressurized wet-sump lubrication uses SAE 10W-30 oil, CDI ignition with electric spark advance provides the spark, and a 2.15 gear ratio turns a 7.7-inch-diameter, 8.0-inch-pitch aluminum propeller. Since there is no internal battery, an owner who wants electric accessories would need Mercury's optional 12-volt, 50-watt alternator installed separately rather than relying on a built-in charging circuit.
